Will Lash Extensions Rip Out My Lashes?

OK, lets put this to rest. I hear this question all the time, and I want to address this concern. As a lash technician, working on lashes for quite a while now, I have newbies who are concerned about their lashes being ripped out by lash extensions.

So here’s the deal: Eyelash extensions are the one-on-one method of application, where one lash extension is placed onto your natural lash. This means that once the lash bonds (about 5 seconds after placement) it will hold on to the lash, and will fall out naturally when your own lash “sheds”. According to the natural lash cycle, you will lose 1-2 lashes a day.

When I see my clients, I usually see that they have healthier lashes after several months of extensions. This is primarily because they are not curling, and painting on gobs of mascara, so there’s a lot less actual wear and tear of the lashes. I see more growth and healthier hair follicle with my lash extension clients….

There is the psychological effect that these women experience though. They feel as though they have less lashes and shorter. This is becauce they have adjusted to the new look and feel of their lash extensions. In reality, their own natural lashes have not been affected.

What are Lash Extensions?

Like hair extensions, eyelash extensions add length to human eyelashes eyelash. Synthetic single fiber polyester thread-like materials are applied to eyelashes to create a fuller, longer look. Extensions come in various lengths, colors and thicknesses, and can be worn during sleep, showering and swimming. However, excessive exposure to oil can weaken adhesive bond. Eyelash extensions differ from “fake” or “false” eyelashes in that they are applied one extension to one lash. The procedure to attach the extensions takes an average of two hours for a full set of extensions of roughly 75-100  lashes per eye. Mink lashes are available, and are sustainably harvested from live minks in the United States. The minks are combed out, their hair sanitized and the individual hairs are used. Mink sets may cost from $300.00 and up. Nylon based hairs, however, not mink are the most typical lashes used . As lashes are placed one upon the other and may never touch the lash next to it, lash extensions are an extremely tedious process. However, the results should look very natural. Eyelash extensions have been around since the late 1990s, used mostly by fashion models and Hollywood. However, since the early 2000s, many salons have offered this service. Eyebrow extensions are available as well, however are not as popular.
